Ask Dr. Sean Thursdays! Do I have to see a chiropractor forever?

Client Question: How long do I need to go to the chiropractor? Do I have to go forever?

This is a question that I get asked so much! It can seem so daunting once starting chiropractic care to imagine having to get checked forever!

The human body is beyond amazing, and has an incredible ability to adapt. The greatest scientists and researchers alive aren’t able to match the wisdom that of the human body. Just think, your body is adapting every second of every day to new stimulus. You are making new immune cells based on what you need. You are turning breakfast (for me this means hardboiled eggs) into new eye cells, kidney cells, liver cells, and more at the exact right time and place. As intelligent and wonderful as the body is, it does have limitations though.

One of the major limitations is that the human body is also very mechanical. Our bones and joints are built like mini-machines, and they need to be checked periodically to make sure they are operating correctly. So much of our lifestyle goes against the machine-like nature of our body. We sit for hours each day, spend far too much time with our head tucked forward looking at a laptop or texting, and then we fail to adequately exercise and move the machine on a regular basis.

As a result, the machine-like aspect of our body is often thrown out of alignment frequently. When this happens, it’s important to be checked and adjusted because otherwise the machine will start to break down. The quicker we can catch and fix this, the healthier and higher functioning the machine is in the long run.

So yes, I do advocate being checked on a regular basis (for most people this means twice per month) forever. The reason for 2 checkups per month is that research has shown that it only takes 2 weeks with a joint in a misaligned position to build up scar tissue that can effect us permanently.

However, if you don’t get checked on a regular basis; that is totally fine too.

My goal is to give you tools and knowledge to empower you, so that you can make the best choices possible to help move you towards your dream life. I firmly believe that chiropractic check-ups on a regular basis will help you in many different areas of your life, as I know it helps me!

Blessings,

Dr. Sean Carey
