Combating Childhood Obesity: The New Epidemic
I’m very excited to offer a special written mini-series called Combating Childhood Obesity: The New Epidemic.I don’t love telling my personal story. Despite the fact that this time in my life occurred almost twenty years ago, it still remains an emotional memory any time I recall it. I will do so in this circumstance, because I want you to understand why I have dedicated so much of my time to become an expert and authority in this area.I was blessed with a wonderful childhood, and enjoyed vibrant health. I was social, loved sports, and I quickly mastered my academics. When I was ten years old, my mother was diagnosed with a large meningioma (a brain tumor). This happened very suddenly. Within 48 hours after having been diagnosed with the tumor, my mother was in surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. As you can imagine, recovering from brain surgery is not an easy task. Due to the location of the tumor, many of the nerves in that area of my mother’s brain had to be removed. She was confined to a hospital bed for six months, facing several years of recovery ahead.During that time, my brother and I were raised by my grandmother, who lived right down the street from our family home. Due to the unexpected bills and insurance co-pays, our father was overwhelmed with overtime hours at work, and the absence of both our parents for my brother and I became devastating. We were deeply depressed by what was happening, and my grandmother did anything and everything she could do to make this time easier for us. She expressed her love the way most grandmothers do, by giving us every junk food and treat imaginable. The first week was absolutely amazing. My brother and I enjoyed cake, cookies, Swiss Rolls, Pop Tarts, Cocoa Puffs, Reese’s Pieces, Velveeta macaroni and cheese, pizza; basically anything you could want as a ten and six year-old.Within six months, however, things were noticeably different. I had trouble sleeping through the night. I had gained a significant amount of weight, as well as developed anxiety, depression, and learning difficulties in the classroom. I was struggling socially, and had lost all confidence in myself. My brain became foggy, and I no longer had the mental clarity that I had previously enjoyed.I ended up becoming extremely overweight. It took YEARS to get myself back on track. However, as things often are, one of my greatest life challenges became one my greatest opportunities. I became obsessed with educating myself on exercise, nutrition, and the complex functions of the human body. I read whatever I could books or literature I could get my hands on about the subject, and sought out brilliant mentors. My fascination motivated me to pursue a degree in nutrition at the University of Maine. At the same time, I became a personal trainer and spent years studying the positive effects of exercise on the body. I also spent part of my college years helping out a nonprofit group in East Boston to create healthy nutrition and exercise plans for at-risk inner-city youth.During my undergraduate education, I was fortunate enough to meet a chiropractor – which led to a series of events that would change my life even more. He altered my entire perception of health and I began to understand the vital importance of the nervous system. Neurology fascinated me because it allowed me to understand what had happened during my mother’s brain tumor as well as during her recovery. It wasn’t until I was taking a series of post-doctoral courses in functional neurology that I TRULY understood nutrition. I discovered the significant effects of food on our body’s natural hormone production, and also how food can affect the health and functioning of the brain, in turn, affecting the rest of the body. I became educated on the unknown sabotages of weight loss and dieting and the importance of proper nutrition in the brain development of children. We are going to cover all of these points IN-DEPTH as part of this mini-series. I can assure you that this information will not only be fascinating, but will be information that you have not been exposed to before. It has taken me several years, hundreds of thousands of dollars, and an enormous amount of time and dedication to learn it myself. In addition, we are initiating a series of in-person community talks that will be covering a variety of controversial and important health topics.
